Does your picture of what successfully managing diabetes looks like match what you are experiencing right now? If not, what are some of your feelings about that? You might be confused by all the information people are presenting you with. There is information about what you should eat. You are no doubt hearing about the role of diet and exercise in managing diabetes. If you are having trouble managing diabetes, you might be experiencing feelings ranging from frustration to discouragement about how well you are handling diet and exercise issues.

“Overwhelming,” is a term people often use in describing what managing diabetes is like. The routine of testing, taking all the medications, just the logistics of it all, can become a real burden.

Coaching can be a way to sort through all the information and all the confusion. Having a coach means someone will listen when you have great blood sugar reading and who will encourage—not judge—when your reading is not so good. A coach is someone you can bounce ideas off of, explore options with, just be there with you as you develop your best way to manage diabetes.
Will coaching work for you? I don’t know. That’s why I would like to offer you a free coaching demonstration session. It takes about a half hour, is a $50 value, involves actual coaching, and is offered with no obligation. We do it by phone, and afterwards you can decide if coaching would be useful to you in managing diabetes.

Type 2 Diabetes Can Affect Every Area of Our Lives
When we picked a chronic condition, who would have thought Type 2 Diabetes would have been such an overwhelming burden on our lives? Of course, no one picks diabetes, even though there are those who say we do by not adequately managing our weight. All of this is to acknowledge the wide range of feelings and emotions that come with a diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes. These can range from anger and frustration to despair and regret.

Diabetes Can Cause Strong Emotions
Fear has a role to play, too, as we become aware of all the health conditions that can be affected by inadequate management of our diabetes. Then there is the guilt. If only…then we would not have contracted this condition. If only we had eaten better, exercised more, etc., etc., then we would not be in our present dilemma. I think there is an interesting aspect to the guilt I think is associated with diabetes. There is so much information available about the management of diabetes it is possible to infer that any time we are not adequately managing our chronic condition, it is certainly not because we do not know what we should do.

Diabetes Makes Us Highly Visible
In addition to our food pyramids, cookbooks, charts graphs, we have our equipment. People observe us when we test our blood sugar in public. Of course, this usually takes place as we are getting ready to eat a meal. Often someone asks us about the number on our meter, and we have the chance to either express pride or guilt for how our current reading relates to the desired blood sugar level.

If we happen to use insulin, that can take the hidden glances to a whole new level. Drawing up insulin, placing the needle inconspicuously aside until our food arrives and then the act of injecting can evoke curiosity from the people around us. If we are on oral medication, we still get the opportunity to discuss medication, diet and exercise used in managing our diabetes.

Coaching Can Help Manage Diabetes
One of the main benefits of coaching in this case is simply having someplace to process all the information and all the feelings that go with having Type 2 Diabetes. It is a good thing that this is a manageable condition. It can be frustrating to wade through the overwhelming amount of material there is. We have great medical, dietary and exercise information available. What we seem to lack is someone to listen as we discuss what this all means to us and help us think through the steps we will take to manage our condition.

That is a simple explanation of what coaching can accomplish in the case of someone with Type 2 Diabetes. It can include a listening ear to hear our needs, our struggles, our goals and our decisions. It can be someone to reflect back to us what we are thinking, to see how it sounds to us. Coaching can also provide accountability, asking us how we are doing on the things we have decided to do.

I have no way of knowing whether or not coaching will be of any benefit to you in managing your condition. That’s why I offer a free, no obligation coaching session. It lasts about half an hour and is a $50 value. Then you can decide if this is something you would benefit from.
